Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are reality shows on MTV about young teenage mothers troubled lives of being a teen mom, and is displaying a negative effect on those teens watching the show by encouraging teenage pregnancy in order to gain their 15 minutes of fame of being on television. This article describes Teen Mom as "relatively simple and about what you would expect. A group of teens who
have recently given birth get followed by MTV’s cameras to see what
their daily lives are like." It shows how these girls are struggling financially, emotionally, with their relationships, with their families, etc. Which at one point of view is educational for teens to see what it is like to be a teenage mother and the difficulties and hardships that come along with being a teen mom. At the same time thought it also puts the lime light on these teen moms and in some cases brings them to fame.
This articles explains this by stating that in order for new episodes of teen mom to come out then new teen mothers have to be getting pregnant, and if a teen girl wants to be on MTV then all she has to do is go get knocked up. "In a recent story first reported on AOL’s PopEater, a source revealed MTV is looking to
ride out the success of Teen Mom” and 16 and Pregnant by
finding a new crop of teen moms willing to have their lives taped by
the network. Of course, to do that they’ll need a new crop of teens with
babies on the way" The secondary source that this article uses convinced me that there are girls whom are just getting pregnant in order to be on MTV. Here is the link to that article. http://www.popeater.com/2010/12/07/teen-mom-pregnant-auditions/. Other supporting evidence that this article uses to support the thesis that teen moms are getting pregnant on purpose to just get on TV is by using well known authors such as Rabbi Shmuely Boteach, a friend of the late Michael Jackson and author
of 'Kosher Sex,' and their thoughts on teenage girls getting pregnant. Rabbi agrees and states "This is out of control celebrity culture. Reality TV first began by
exploiting people's problems, assuming they would do anything for fame.
The idea of teenage girls getting pregnant to be on television shows
that reality TV is going a step beyond exploiting problems. It is now
creating the problems."
In order to verify the supporting evidence that this article used I tried looking up information on Rabbi Shmuely, and I actually found a lot of useful information that helped me decide that he is a credible person to listen and agree with his take on Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. I found an article from Oprah actually that he is explaining what it is like to be a new mother and giving advice about being a mother. Which leads me to believe that he really knows his stuff! He is educated on motherhood and knows what to expect when someone becomes a new mother. Because of his knowledge of knowing about motherhood it reinforces my thoughts of teen moms trying to get pregnant to be on MTV and it also reinforces me to believe what he is saying is true.
