We are all doomed quest

Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are reality shows on MTV about young teenage mothers troubled lives of being a teen mom, and is displaying a negative effect on those teens watching the show by encouraging teenage pregnancy in order to gain their 15 minutes of fame of being on television. This article describes Teen Mom as "relatively simple and about what you would expect. A group of teens who have recently given birth get followed by MTV’s cameras to see what their daily lives are like." It shows how these girls are struggling financially, emotionally, with their relationships, with their families, etc. Which at one point of view is educational for teens to see what it is like to be a teenage mother and the difficulties and hardships that come along with being a teen mom. At the same time thought it also puts the lime light on these teen moms and in some cases brings them to fame.

This articles explains this by stating that in order for new episodes of teen mom to come out then new teen mothers have to be getting pregnant, and if a teen girl wants to be on MTV then all she has to do is go get knocked up. "In a recent story first reported on AOL’s PopEater, a source revealed MTV is looking to ride out the success of Teen Mom” and 16 and Pregnant by finding a new crop of teen moms willing to have their lives taped by the network. Of course, to do that they’ll need a new crop of teens with babies on the way" The secondary source that this article uses convinced me that there are girls whom are just getting pregnant in order to be on MTV. Here is the link to that article. http://www.popeater.com/2010/12/07/teen-mom-pregnant-auditions/. Other supporting evidence that this article uses to support the thesis that teen moms are getting pregnant on purpose to just get on TV is by using well known authors such as Rabbi Shmuely Boteach, a friend of the late Michael Jackson and author of 'Kosher Sex,' and their thoughts on teenage girls getting pregnant. Rabbi agrees and states "This is out of control celebrity culture. Reality TV first began by exploiting people's problems, assuming they would do anything for fame. The idea of teenage girls getting pregnant to be on television shows that reality TV is going a step beyond exploiting problems. It is now creating the problems."

In order to verify the supporting evidence that this article used I tried looking up information on Rabbi Shmuely, and I actually found a lot of useful information that helped me decide that he is a credible person to listen and agree with his take on Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. I found an article from Oprah actually that he is explaining what it is like to be a new mother and giving advice about being a mother. Which leads me to believe that he really knows his stuff! He is educated on motherhood and knows what to expect when someone becomes a new mother. Because of his knowledge of knowing about motherhood it reinforces my thoughts of teen moms trying to get pregnant to be on MTV and it also reinforces me to believe what he is saying is true. Reading Quest #2

"If a tumor in the prefrontal cortex can totally change someones behavior and change their life completely, then maybe those whom are in prison for being rapists, or those teenagers who just party and sleep around do these things because of the development of their prefrontal cortex?"

The prefrontal cortex is in charge of making decisions, planning complex cognitive behavior, personalities, expressions, etc. It truly is what separates us from every other animal in the world. We can make decisions and feel more and have very distinct personalities. But these decisions that are made and the different type of personalities each person has varies dramatically from person to person. I asked the question that if it is possible that the reason people whom do awful crimes and take drugs and party and do these types of things is simply because of the way their prefrontal cortex is developed? Maybe it is not 100% their fault and maybe we shouldnt be punishing them for not being able to distinguish what decision to make and how they feel. Not that I am saying that they shouldnt be punished for committing these crimes but perhaps they should be getting different kind of help rather than just being locked away for a few years in prison. Perhaps there is a different kind of method that we can use to help these people develop their prefrontal cortex so that they can make what society would claim "the RIGHT decision" To answer my question I did research and I found this website, "Maturation of the PreFrontal Cortex" It showed me the different responsibilities the prefrontal cortex has and how lack of maturation can differ the decisions that people make. I believe that if people can realize that they are this way because it is simply how their brain is "wired" and that through counceling and therapy we can help these people distinguish what to do in certain situations and how to control their intense emotions with correct decision making that it would make a much bigger impact in their lives rather than just locking people away in prison or suspended their licenses or kicking them out of school, etc. We are just pushing the issue far away by doing this to people, we should try and get them the help they need and help them understand why they are making this decisions and it can also help us understand they people make these decisions. Overall I think it is amazing how a single tumor pressed up against the prefrontal cortex can completely alter someones life, like the example in the book about the girl whom was going to an Ivy league school all of a sudden began partying and sleeping around when her normal behavior would have never been like this, just a little change to the prefrontal cortex alters who we are and I believe that is why people are so dramatically different and why they make decisions they make, its not their fault that their brains are developed this way and we need to remember this and try to help them rather than just putting them away with the "crazy" people.

Alien Tour Guide Essay

And
Cherice Gaviglia
While doing the Alien Tour Guide Cherice and I chose to tell our alien about the library. Our first original question was that “This is the library, this is where we study” the alien then asks why and Cherice and I had to sit and think about all the times that we have been in the library and why we were there. The first assumption that we came up with was that we just always go straight to the library when we need to study we have never sat there and thought about why we go to a certain place to study. After doing the alien tour guide we realized we go to the library because it is the most convenient place because it is quiet and we have resources such as books and computers to use if we need them. We have always just headed straight to the library to study it was never a question of “Why are you going to the library?” It is just an assumption that we would go to the library because that is what is normal to us, therefore it we do not question it. The second assumption that we came up with was the last question that we asked which was “We are trying to improve our knowledge so that we can have a good paying career and nice possessions for ourselves and our future families." The assumption that we got from this question was that we have never gone to the library and thought to ourselves “were going to the library so in the future my future family can have nice things..” we just go to the library because we feel  that it is what we are supposed to do, we have never thought about the bigger picture of why we were even studying the material in the first place.
